Diagnostic Imaging

Imaging answers clinical questions. Our physicians order X-ray, MRI, or CT when the examination raises a question that imaging can answer: whether there is a fracture, a disc injury, a structural abnormality that changes the treatment plan.

Imaging services are available at our San Antonio location. Patients at other locations are scheduled with imaging partners near them.

What imaging shows, and what it does not

Imaging is powerful and bounded, and we are direct with patients about both. A normal CT after a head injury means no bleeding or fracture was detected. It does not exclude mild traumatic brain injury, which usually involves microscopic injury below CT resolution. In the multicenter TRACK-TBI study, 27 percent of TBI patients with a normal CT had visible injury on a later MRI []. This is why imaging results at Axon are read alongside the clinical examination and, where indicated, laboratory findings, rather than treated as the whole answer, and why we describe unremarkable imaging as normal, with an explanation of what the study could and could not detect.

Standards

Imaging is performed on maintained, accredited equipment, interpreted by qualified radiologists, and reported into the patient's record where the treating physician integrates it with the rest of the evaluation.
